Homily preached by Anna Flot and Vivienne Muller

Anna:
The Sierra Service Project (SSP) is a way for people to give back and help those who can’t help themselves. At these trips you meet new people, learn new things, and get the satisfaction of helping others.
On this trip, the group I was in, had to remove old roofing and put down new. We got to know each other and do things we never thought we’d do. I also got to see some people I met at other trips. With everyone else, you do games, sing and really get to know the others.

Vivienne:
When I was in the Walker River reservation, in Schurz, NV, my group had the task of building steps to a porch and scraping paint off of a house. If you have ever scraped paint before, you can imagine how fun that was. Building steps wasn’t too hard of a task, but it did take a lot of work. The paint scraping took a bit longer, but by the end we had much of the house paint-free.

After we finished, we felt like maybe our presence had actually impacted just a few people’s lives, and that their lives would be better because of a few groups of teenagers bored with their summer vacations. By going out to Nevada to help these people, it was like we were helping the poor man Lazarus out by the gates of the rich man in purple, and satisfying his hunger.
